Data Import

Data Import Overview

This section defines the currently accepted data formats and configuration for importing data using Horizons Data Import. Imported data can be used to create mapping Layers and graphs in the Explorer module. Imported data can include links to external documents or images which will be displayed as live links or viewable images in the Explorer module. You can also import condition data and make it available in the Analysis module to trigger Treatments. Mapping Layers created using the data import functionality can be used as Priorities for proposed works within the Analysis module.

Data import is limited to 1 million items and 2,000 MB per project. Data import limits are displayed at the bottom of the data import drop-down and show the amount of allowance used.

Allowances

To increase your account limits, please contact Causeway Support.

The following table describes the steps involved in importing a data file, and points you to more information on each task.

Prepare data file for import

Files for data import should contain only data of the same type, so that you can map the columns to Horizons fields effectively.

Upload data file

Upload the data file(s) into Horizons.

Configure data import

Define how Horizons associates items of data with the Sections in your Network. The association can be made within your data or automatically.

Configure how the import treats certain data items, see Importing and Configuring a Data Import.

Define how references to Sections are set, see About References Included in Data.

Configure data import fields

Further configure the mapping between your data and the Horizons fields. Produce a data import configuration file, which you can export for use again for a similar data import, Configuring Data Import Fields.

Validate and process data import

The data is validated against the Network. Error and warning logs are generated. You can then edit the data import configuration fields and re-validate the import until any errors and warnings are resolved, see Validating and Processing a Data Import.

The import data is committed into the main Horizons database. Any items failing validation are not committed.

View the data in Explorer

A default Layer is generated by the import. New Layers can be generated based upon the imported data.

The Layer can be viewed in Explorer and fields may be available to use in Analysis.

Share Layer and Data

If User Access Control is enabled, the imported data and default Layer are initially created as privately owned by the user who committed the import. The owner may then share Layers (and underlying data) with other user groups.
